SSI for Students 2026: Income Limits, SEIE, and Eligibility

Can students receive SSI in 2026? Learn about the Student Earned Income Exclusion ($2,410/month), how financial aid affects benefits, and the age 18 redetermination rules.

Here is everything you need to know about the 2026 SSI rules for students.

1. The Student Earned Income Exclusion (SEIE)

This is the most powerful tool for students in 2026. The SEIE allows you to work a part-time job or internship and earn a significant amount of money without the SSA reducing your SSI check by a single penny.

The 2026 Limits:

  • Monthly Limit: You can earn up to $2,410 per month tax-free (for SSI purposes).
  • Annual Limit: You can exclude up to a total of $9,730 per year.
  • Example: If you earn $2,000 at a summer internship, your $994 SSI check stays exactly the same. You get to keep both!

2. What Counts as "Regularly Attending School"?

To qualify for these 2026 student exclusions, you must be under age 22 and meet the following minimum hour requirements:

  • College or University: At least 8 hours per week.
  • Grades 7–12: At least 12 hours per week.
  • Vocational/Technical Training: At least 12 hours per week (15 if it involves shop practice).
  • Home Schooling: At least 12 hours per week following state laws.

3. Financial Aid & Scholarships

Many students worry that a Pell Grant or a private scholarship will count as "income" and stop their benefits.

  • Tuition & Fees: Any money used for tuition, books, fees, and necessary school supplies is ignored by the SSA.
  • Room & Board: Be careful—if you use scholarship money to pay for food or rent, the SSA may count that as income, which could reduce your monthly check.

4. The "Turning 18" Redetermination

If you have been receiving SSI as a child, the SSA will perform a "Medical Redetermination" when you turn 18. This is a critical moment.

  • The SSA will now use the adult definition of disability, which focuses on your ability to work.
  • Pro Tip: Going to school full-time is not proof that you can work. In fact, if you are in an approved vocational program, you might be protected under Section 301, allowing you to keep benefits even if they decide your health has improved.

Keep Your Study Schedule Organized
