Parental Income Limits for Child SSI 2026: Rules & Deeming

How much can parents earn for a child to qualify for SSI in 2026? Learn about the "deeming" process, income exclusions, and the new $5,000+ monthly limits.

Here is how parental income affects your child's SSI in 2026.

1. The "Deeming" Secret: Not All Income Counts

The SSA assumes parents use their income to support their children. However, they first "set aside" money for your own living expenses and for any other children in the home who do not have a disability.

What they IGNORE before counting your income:

  • Other Children: They subtract a "living allowance" for every non-disabled child in your house.
  • The $85 Rule: They ignore the first $85 of your monthly gross wages.
  • The 50% Rule: They only count half of your remaining wages.

2. 2026 Estimated Income Limits for Parents

Because the Federal Benefit Rate increased to $994 for individuals in 2026, the amount parents can earn has also gone up.

While every case is different, here is a general "Safe Zone" for 2026 (assuming you have no other income sources like child support or SSDI):

Household SetupYou can earn roughly up to...
1 Parent (No other kids)$4,000+ per month
1 Parent (1 other child)$4,500+ per month
2 Parents (No other kids)$5,000+ per month
2 Parents (1 other child)$5,500+ per month

Note: If your gross income is below these amounts, your child may qualify for at least a partial SSI payment.

3. Assets: The $2,000 / $3,000 Rule

While your income can be higher, your assets (savings, extra cars, stocks) are strictly limited.

  • Single Parent: You can have $2,000 in countable resources.
  • Two Parents: You can have $3,000 in countable resources.
  • What's Safe: Your home and one vehicle generally do not count toward these limits.

4. Why Every Dollar of SSI Counts

Even if your income reduces your child's SSI check to just $10 or $20 a month, keep it. In most states, receiving any amount of SSI automatically qualifies your child for Medicaid, which can save you thousands in therapy and medical costs.
